National Police Week:Honoring Those Who Gave Everything
Mayor Julie Hoy has officially proclaimed this Police Week in the City of Salem, recognizing the Salem Police Department’s nearly 170 years of service and calling on all Salemites to honor the men and women who protect our community every day. May 15 is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, a time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Your donation helps the Salem Police Foundation continue supporting the officers and families who carry that weight.
When the convention center filled up for this year’s Breakfast with the Chief, every officer in the Salem Police Department felt it. That kind of support is not something you can manufacture. It has to be earned. And this community has earned it.
The energy in that room mattered. So did the outcomes it made possible. Equipment that works. Training that prepares. And a ballistic shield that protected a young officer when it counted most. Your generosity put that shield in his hands.
We were honored to celebrate Chief Womack at this year’s event. If you know him at all, you know he would be the first to say the credit belongs to his officers and his staff. That is exactly the kind of leader he is. He has spent his career stepping out of the spotlight and pointing it at the people beside him. Salem is better for it, and so is this department. We wish him a retirement full of the same quiet pride he gave to this city every single day.
Thank you to every sponsor, donor, and supporter who made this year’s Breakfast what it was. A room full of belief. A community standing together. A very clear message that Salem’s officers are not alone.
Behind every badge is a story—of a protector, a mentor, a parent rushing into danger, a child missing holidays, a neighbor putting others first. With nearly 200 officers, Salem’s police force serves not just with duty, but with heart.
They face uncertainty so that we can live in peace. And they should never have to face it alone. The Salem Police Foundation stands beside them, funding wellness, equipment, and outreach programs that protect those who protect us all.
Founded in 2010, the Salem Police Foundation builds bridges between the community and the Salem Police Department. We invest in officer wellness, cutting-edge training, and innovative technology, while funding outreach initiatives that protect both officers and our community.
