Salem, OR, (Jan. 5, 2018), After four years on the force, hundreds of deployments and a violent standoff, two Salem police K-9 officers, Jake and Baco, are retiring. Salem On Ice, at Salem Riverfront Park, welcomes the Salem Police Department, and the public to join them in celebrating the accomplishments of these four-legged crime stoppers on a successful career solving crimes and keeping Salem citizens safe.
Baco, a German Shepherd from the Netherlands, joined the Salem Police Department in 2013. Since then, he was deployed more than 600 times, and apprehended nearly 300 suspects.
His Handler, Sgt. Trevor Morrison, said “Baco was always full of energy and eager to work.” In 2015, Baco was shot in the face during a violent standoff in a Wal-Mart parking lot. The suspect, a wanted felon, fired several rounds at officers as they tried to take him into custody. When Baco was sent in to apprehend the suspect, the suspect shot him in the face.
“Although Baco suffered a gunshot wound to the face, he was back on duty in less than two weeks,” said Salem Police Deputy Chief Steve Bellshaw. The Salem Police Department and the Oregon Peace Officers Association honored Baco with a Medal of Valor.
Jake, a German Shepherd from the Czech Republic, also joined the department in 2013. Since then, Jake has been deployed 600 times, and apprehended about 400 suspects. His handler,
Officer Matt Gill, said “Jake was also well-known for presentations and was especially popular with children wanting to pet him. It was incredible to watch Jake go from a tenacious suspect chaser to a butterfly in an instant.”
Both Baco and Jake were popular guests at public demonstrations and community events.
Salem On Ice co-owner, Andrea Murray, has generously agreed to donate a portion of the skating session time proceeds, along with concessions sales to the K-9 Retirement Fund. There will be a photo booth for photos with Jake, Baco and their handlers. Salem On Ice
