Our Current Needs

The Foundation is currently raising funds for the following programs:

Volcanic Bikes
SPD has an active group of officers, who patrol on bikes. This Downtown Team performs an important function through their interaction with citizens, ability to go into
various parts of the City and neighborhoods where vehicles often cannot easily travel. While taking advantage of the environmentally friendly aspect of bicycles, the Team also has many positive interactions with citizens, observes and identifies issues and provides critical information to law enforcement partners.

Many homeless people camp in the 1,200 acre Willamette River Parks Complex adjacent to downtown Salem. Police were notified a woman was in labor deep in the woods and inaccessible by ambulance. Durable, appropriate for the job, Volcanic bicycles would have been able to navigate the trail system faster and more efficiently than the Trek bicycles. The woman and child were ultimately treated and taken to safety.

High-quality equipment is essential as these officers also need to be prepared for the same emergency situations as patrol officers in cars. Volcanic Bikes are specially designed to be light and durable. Used by the Los Angeles Police Department, these bicycles are highly desirable by those in and made in the Northwest. The SPF is seeking donations to purchase these bikes for the 10 officers on the downtown team at $2,500 per bike.

Thank you to Jerry and Susan Thompson and Editha Rowell Trust who have each sponsored one bike!

TI Training Simulator:  So Our Officers are Ready

Preparation is the key to survival. The Ti Training Simulator helps prepare officers with specialized training for moments when life is on the line and split-second decisions matter. Law Enforcement training prepares personnel for life or death situations, so the reward for winning is coming home safe at the end of the day. TI’s interactive simulations are highly effective educational scenarios which challenge the trainee’s decision making ability and help develop life-saving skills. The goal is to prepare law enforcement personnel to be highly effective in life and death situations. The Salem Police Foundation is seeking to raise $50k+ to purchase this training simulator that can be used by both SPD and other jurisdictions.

Part of the funds for this training equipment was raised at the 2019 Breakfast with the Chief.  This multi-year ask is still approximately $30,000 short of its goal.
