Salem Police have a new fuming chamber for processing fingerprints, thanks to the donation by Mike and Bev Carrick to the Salem Police Foundation.
Mike responded to the need for the chamber during the Breakfast with the Chief event last February. His gift allowed the foundation to buy the chamber, which was formally added to the department’s inventory on Sept. 26.
For several years the Salem Police crime lab used an old fish tank for cyanoacrylate (super glue) fuming, a method discovered in the late 1970s to develop fingerprints. The size of the fish tank limited the size and number of items that could be processed. The new chamber greatly increases the department’s capabilities.
