Dear Salem Community,
On behalf of the Salem Police Foundation, I want to reach out during this time of unrest with a message of reassurance.
I have had the privilege of working alongside our excellent police department for more than 20 years, and I am proud of their reputation and policing strategies that keep us all safe.
The Salem Police Department is a leader in positive community engagement and community policing. Chief Jerry Moore and officers regularly attend neighborhood associations, community listening sessions, host Coffee with a Cop, have regular conversations with the local NAACP, meet with pastoral associations, and provide adult mentorship to at-risk youth through the Gladiator’s program.
These examples offer open access to our department for our community to build trusting relationships with our officers, and in turn, our officers with our community.
We are all aware of the tragedy that unfolded in Minneapolis, recorded for us all to see. National outrage at the loss of George Floyd and other injustices demands we all come together and talk without violence. The Salem Police Department will be at that conversation, as they have in the past.
There are difficult community situations when police must provide law and order. The lawlessness that tarnishes our community comes from people our officers are sworn to protect us from. These actions hurt our community, are senseless, and create damage and fear. The Salem Police Department will stand in front of us, protect our community, and bring a stop to these acts of violence. If you need assistance during this time, please reach out to the department by calling (503) 588-6123.
Please join the conversation. Protest peacefully, stand up for injustice, use your voice, engage with leaders, vote, say Hi to everyone you pass on the sidewalk, say thank you, spread kindness, smile, find common ground, donate, treat others as you wish to be treated, and stay engaged – be part of the healing. We all have a role to play in creating an equal and equitable community and nation, and the Salem Police Foundation board looks forward to meeting you at the table.
Stay Safe,
