In a letter signed by Salem Mayor Anna Peterson and all eight city councilors, the council officially thanked the Salem Police Foundation and its donors for contributions supporting the Salem Police Department.
“Providing support to our officers, as the Foundation has done on many occasions, lets our officers know they are truly appreciated and valued,” the letter said. “Thank you for your efforts in generating such a great response from our community and for your continued support through your fundraising efforts.”
The letter cites in particular the foundation’s purchase of trauma kits for each officer. “As evidenced by the recent shooting in Benton County, a trauma kit is an essential tool in today’s society for the safety of our officers and community members. As we learned from this situation, not only did the Salem Police Department save the life of another officer but the life of the suspect as well.”
